For decades, the team members at the Center for Management & Organization Effectiveness have studied the literature and conducted research on the skills and qualities needed to be an effective leader. The data can often suggest that leaders are expected to be superhuman, which seems discouraging and unreasonable to a lot of people.
However, by applying the 80/20 Pareto principle, we’ve found that there is a manageable list of core knowledge areas, skills, and abilities that form the foundation of good leadership. We call this short list the “must-haves.” Let’s explore these five leadership pillars.
1. Communication — The Backbone of Effective Teamwork
Effective teamwork depends on good communication. A good leader must be an active listener. Highly effective leaders are curious and focused on understanding before expecting to be understood. They ask insightful questions, share speaking time, and paraphrase to ensure that communication is clear.
These leaders are assertive but avoid being aggressive or intimidating. They adjust their perspectives according to the facts and insights revealed through communicating openly, fostering trust, and strengthening relationships within their teams.
2. Self-Awareness — Knowing Yourself and Your Team
Good leaders take the time to understand their strengths, limitations, and personality traits by engaging in regular introspection. They are also interested in learning the same about their team members, striving to create team synergy and minimize conflict.
Self-aware leaders have the flexibility to adjust their approach, ensuring smoother interactions and avoiding destructive tension. By managing their egos, they maintain a balanced team dynamic, helping the team operate efficiently.
3. Accountability — Owning Both Success and Failure
Accountability is essential for leadership. Highly effective leaders hold themselves and their teams accountable for their actions. They are willing to admit mistakes and take ownership, and they expect the same from others. They provide feedback and coaching while being open to receiving feedback themselves.
In addition to establishing a culture of accountability for everyone on the team, they also regularly celebrate the achievements of their team members, recognizing the value each person contributes to the organization.
4. Embrace Change — Continuous Improvement
Continuous improvement is a key strength of great leaders. They understand that change is a constant in life and business and are open to letting go of outdated practices. Effective leaders are comfortable embracing new challenges and guide their teams through the change process, ensuring that everyone adapts and grows into the new requirements.
They help others adopt new strategies and approaches, ensuring long-term, sustained success for both individuals and the organization.
5. Team Development — Establishing Working Agreements
Lastly, good leaders understand the importance of developing their team members, regardless of the team’s size or role in the organization. Leaders establish working agreements: ground rules that shape behavior and mindset within the team. These agreements are created with input from the team, allowing everyone to take part in the process.
The team’s working agreements are revisited and refreshed periodically to keep up with the demands of customers, senior management, and other teams. By doing this, leaders ensure their team remains aligned with the broader strategy and vision of the organization.
Conclusion: Leadership Doesn’t Require Superhuman Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
While leadership may seem overwhelming at times, mastering a few key skills is the first important step on the road to becoming a highly effective leader. If leaders focus on these five essentials — communication, self-awareness, accountability, adaptability, and team development — they will cultivate an engaged, motivated, and loyal workforce. While there are countless ways to improve as a leader, sticking to these core “must-haves” provides a solid foundation.
