Managing Change

Since change is inevitable, especially in organizations, it is essential for everyone to have the ability to embrace change and harness its advantages. Unfortunately, some people have a tendency to view change from a negative perspective because of their natural temperament or past experiences with change. People who are averse to change fear having the status quo altered or their security disturbed. Other people acknowledge that although change may create some discomfort, the potential and opportunity that comes with change is constructive: While change comes with a price, remaining stagnant and rigid is much more costly in the long run.

Those who are able to effectively cope with change and be change agents will be of great worth to an organization. In the Managing Change workshop, participants become more aware of their perspective and attitudes about change and discover how their work, flexibility, and contribution to the organization may be affected as a result. They also learn how being able to effectively manage change increases their credibility and influence. Participants in the program gain not only the skills and tools needed to increase their personal resiliency and successfully manage change that is thrust upon them, they also learn how to be change agents by creating and orchestrating productive change in the organization.

This workshop is available as a standalone learning experience for coping with change or it can be combined with CMOE’s Innovation Skills workshop. These two topics are a natural pairing, because many changes that people face are associated with new, innovative ideas or approaches.

Objective & Outcomes

As a result of the workshop, participants will

  • Understand what change is and how it works.
  • Recognize the internal and external forces or drivers of change.
  • Be more aware of their own reactions to change and the reactions of others.
  • Coach and guide themselves through the stages of change so they can succeed during periods of transition.
  • Be more resilient during changes and absorb change more effectively.
  • Recognize their own resistance or the resistance that others exhibit during periods of change.
  • Identify opportunities for innovative or strategic change and serve as a change agent in the organization.
  • Carefully evaluate situations to understand the reasons why making a change is necessary.

Our Approach

The Managing Change workshop is designed to provide individual contributors and/or managers with the skills, techniques, and tools needed to effectively manage their responses when change occurs and contribute to a more “change-able” organization. By incorporating the following design elements into the program, CMOE’s Managing Change workshop helps participants raise their self-awareness and discover how they can build on their inherent strengths while working on opportunities for improvement:

  • Self-discovery exercises
  • Discussions
  • Short presentations
  • Business simulations
  • Models and skills
  • Survey feedback
  • Examples and case studies
  • Tools
  • Action plans

What makes the program unique is that the workshop participants use time during the course to work on a current change they are facing. This allows the change-management concepts and skills to be applied and practiced with a relevant, real-world scenario even before the participants return to work.
